I met Marisa Davis at the ASTD International Conference and Exposition in Dallas last month. She spent time between conference sessions and volunteering for ASTD to help make the conference a success. She’s the founder and President of In The Know Consulting and has experience in secondary education, corporate education and training, e-learning, writing, and editing/quality assurance. More importantly, she’s a really nice person, which is why I offered to publish her contribution to the “How I Work” by L&D professionals series on my blog. So, meet Marisa Davis (@ITKnowConsult)!

One word that best describes how you work
What apps/software/tools can’t you live without?
Articulate, Microsoft Office including Outlook, Google including Drive, Search, and Gmail, my smartphone…and my Keurig (can’t live without my coffee).
What’s your workspace like?
Both flat desks with dual monitors. I have “organized chaos” – lots of piles but I know what/where everything is. Many post-it notes stuck to the desk or monitor frames.
What’s your best time-saving trick?
Multi-tasking. Open all necessary windows at the beginning and keep them open throughout work process, so I don’t have to continuously open new things.
What’s your favorite to-do list manager?
I use Google Tasks since it syncs with my calendar on my smartphone.
Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can’t you live without?
As mentioned previously, my Keurig for sure. And my DVR. And I love my Samsung Galaxy tablet too.
What everyday thing are you better at than anyone else?
I’m detail-oriented. Sometimes to a fault.
What do you listen to while you work?
I don’t usually listen to anything, because I find music will distract me from the task at hand. I’ll play white noise or ocean waves sounds through my headphones though sometimes.
Are you more of an introvert or extrovert?
I’m definitely an introvert… but I work really hard to be an extrovert when it comes to work, networking, and social interaction. But it exhausts me, and I find I need anti-social/down/alone time for hours to recover.
What’s your sleep routine like?
I try to get 7-8 hours/night. I usually get 6-7.
Fill in the blank. I’d love to see ________ answer these same questions.
Oh, so many people. I’ll go with Tom’s answer – everyone in my PLN.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
From my dad: If something is worth doing, it is worth doing it right the first time. This pretty much encompasses everything for me.
